CHRISTIE, 54th Bn, 23 March 1917: 'They [4270 R. McAULAY and 4391 H. McAULAY] were twins and in L.G. [Lewis Gun] Section. One of them (I think R. McAulay) was killed on July 19th., in the German front line at Fromelles. Sgt. Major Meiley of B. Coy told me this and I think he had seen him killed. I have heard that the other is P/W, but am not certain, and cannot remember informant's name.' Second statement, 4206 Pte J. FITZGERALD, B Company, 54th Bn (patient, Red Cross Hospital, Netley, England), 16 February 1917: 'When we were occupying the trenches which we captured from the Germans at Fromelles on July 19/16. H. McAulay told Pte H. McCarthy of B Coy that his brother had been wounded.' |
