Embarked Sydney on HMAT 'Ayrshire', 22 January 1917; disembarked Devonport, England, 12 April 1917; marched into 13th Training Bn, Codford, 13 April 1917.

Found guilty at Codford, 24 April 1917, of (1) being found in Codford without pass, 10.45 pm, 23 April 1917, and (2) being improperly dressed in that he was not wearing a belt while in Codford village: awarded fine of 2 days' pay. Found guilty at Codford, 19 May 1917, of being absent without leave, 8.00 am, 16 May, to 9.00 am, 18 May 1917: awarded 10 days' Field Punishment No 2; forfeited total of 13 days' pay. Proceeded to France through Folkestone, 6 August 1917; marched into 4th Australian Divisional Base Depot, Havre, 8 June 1917; moved out to unit, 22 August 1917; taken on strength of 52nd Bn in the field, 21 October 1917.

Admitted to 44th Casualty Clearing Station, 21 October 1917 (shrapnel wound, arm, leg and foot); transferred to Ambulance Train '32', 24 October 1917; admitted to 26th General Hospital, Etaples, 25 October 1917; prepared for evacuation, 29 October 1917. Embarked on HS 'Brighton' and proceeded to England, 30 November 1917; admitted to Brook War Hospital, Woolwich, 30 November 1917 (multiple severe gun shot wounds, amputated arm above the elbow); transferred to 2nd Auxiliary Hospital, Southall, 25 January 1918; discharged on furlough, 31 January 1918. Marched into No 2 Command Depot, Weymouth, 16 February 1918.

Found guilty at London, 16 February 1918, of being absent without leave, 10.30 am, 14 February, to 9.45 am, 16 February 1918: admonished by superior officer; forfeits total of 3 days' pay.

Commenced return to Australia after change on HT 'Port Darwin', 12 July 1918; disembarked 2nd Military District, 17 August 1918, for onward travel to Brisbane. Discharged as being medically unfit for service, Brisbane, 21 December 1918 (amputated arm, severe gun shot wounds).
