'Near Le Bridoux on the night of 12/13 June. Sergt. McCarthy was the Sergeant in command of one of the parties and was exceptionally fine in rallying that party before entering and in his work in the trench. He was very cool-headed throughout in ejecting prisoners. It was mainly through him that the heavy enemy M.G. was with difficulty got out of their trench. By his leadership and coolness he inspired the remainder of his party.'
