Military Medal 'For conspicuous bravery and devotion to duty whilst acting as drivers of a Horsed Ambulance Wagon in the ZONNEBEKE area, east of YPRES, during the operations on 22nd October, 1917,especially under the following circumstances: In the early morning of abovementioned date, whilst the enemy was heavily shelling the YPRES ZONNEBEKE Road with H.E. shells these drivers [McCARTHY and 2000 H.W. MARSHALL] volunteered to convey seriously wounded men down to the Motor Wagon Loading Post. This they continued to do until the whole number of the wounded had been cleared. The devotion to duty inspired other drivers to undertake the dangerous journey and a congestion was thereby averted.'
