Embarked Alexandria on HMT 'Oriana' and proceeded to join the British Expeditionary Force, 21 March 1916; disembarked Marseilles, 29, March 1916; moved out to field, 23 April 1916; taken on strength of 23rd Bn, 24 April 1916.

Admitted to 6th Australian Field Ambulance, 14 March 1917, and transferred to 2nd Divisional Rest Station (bronchial catarrh); ; discharged to duty, 24 March 1917; rejoined unit from hospital, 26 March 1917; proceeded on leave to England, 21 February 1918; rejoined unit from leave, 15 March 1918.

Found guilty in the field, 29 March 1918, of being absent without leave, 7.30 am, 8 March, to 7.30 am, 13 March 1918: awarded 28 days' Field Punishment No 2; forfeited total of 34 days' pay; appointed Lance Corporal, 24 July 1918; proceeded on leave to United Kingdom, 22 January 1919.

Admitted to 1st Australian Dermatological Hospital, Bulford, 28 February 1919 (venereal disease); discharged to Convalescent Training Depot, Parkhouse, 26 April 1919 (total period of treatment for venereal disease: 58 days); marched into No 2 Group, Sutton Veny, 6 May 1919.

Embarked Devonport on HT 'Rio-Negre' and commenced return to Australia, 29 May 1919; disembarked Melbourne, 22 July 1919. Discharged Melbourne, 13 September 1919.
