War service: Egypt, Gallipoli Taken on strength of 7th Light Horse Regiment, 2 October 1915. Admitted to No 1 Australian Casualty Clearing Station, 11 December 1915; transferred to HS 'Oxfordshire', 12 December 1915 (bronchitis); to No 3 Auxiliary Hospital, Cairo, 15 December 1915; to New Zealand Convalescent Home, 1 January 1916; discharged to unit, 4 January 1916. Transferred to 12th Light Horse Regiment, 21 February 1916; marched into 12th Light Horse Regiment, Tel el Kebir, 26 April 1916. Tried by Field General Court Martial, 7 December 1916, on a charge of neglect to the prejudice of good order and military discipline in that he neglected to carry out his duties as Farrier Sergeant at Ferry Post Railhead on 25th and 27 November 1916: found Not Guilty. Admitted to No 3 East Anglian Field Ambulance, 20 December 1916 (dysentery); transferred to No 26 Stationary Hospital, Ismailia, 23 December 1916; to No 14 Australian General Hospital, Cairo, 27 December 1916; discharged, 21 January 1917. Commenced return to Australia from Suez on board HS 'Euripides', 22 January 1917 (debility and post-enteric); disembarked Sydney, 21 February 1917; returned to duty, 11 April 1917; discharged (medically unfit), 21 June 1917.
