'For conspicuous gallantry during an advance. His battalion was practically isolated for two days, during which he tended wounded under fire. He continually crossed machine gun swept spaces, after stretcher bearers has been shot down, to attend wounded. Throughout he showed untiring energy and devotion to duty, and by his fine conduct saved many lives.'
