War service: Western Front Embarked Sydney, 24 August 1916; disembarked Devonport, England, 12 October 1916. Found guilty, 20 November 1916, of being absent without leave, 9-17 November 1916: awarded 8 days' detention, and forfeited 20 days' pay. Proceeded overseas to France, 13 December 1916; taken on strength, 24th Bn, in the field, 27 January 1917. Admitted to 56th Casualty Clearing Station, 26 May 1917 (trench fever); transferred to 5th General Hospital, Rouen, 5 June 1917; to England, 16 June 1917, and admitted to 3rd London General Hospital, Wandsworth, 17 June 1917. Transferred to 3rd Auxiliary Hospital, Dartford, 12 July 1917; discharged on furlough, 31 July-14 August 1917. Commenced return to Australia from Devonport on board HT 'Berrima', 31 October 1917 (debility following trench fever); diembarked Melbourne, 30 December 1917, for onward travel to Sydney; discharged, Sydney (medically unfit), 5 February 1918.
