'This man who was a runner between his Battery Commanders Headquarters and Group Headquarters during the operations near ZONNEBEKE on 26th September, 1917, acted with extreme courage and devotion to duty. On several occasions when communications with Group Headquarters were cut, he delivered urgent messages under exceptionally heavy shell fire. He displayed cheerful readiness to perform any duty asked of him when the Battery relieved the front line guns, and on several occasions delivered necessary messages to the front line under shell fire and fire from snipers.'
