War service: enlisted at Rockhampton, Queensland. Disembarked Plymouth, England, 18 October 1916. Pte McDonald was absent without leave from 4:00 30 November 1916 to 10:00 5 December 1916. Awarded 168 hours detention and forfeits 10 days pay; total forfeiture 15 days pay. Taken on strength of 4th Pioneer Bn, 25 February 1917. He was admitted to hospital suffering from influenza on 2 September 1917. He was admitted to hospital sick while on furlough in England on 16 October 1917. He rejoined his unit in France on 28 February 1917. On 5 December 1917, Pte McDonald was taken on strength of the Australian Army Medical Corps, and remained stationed at the 2nd Australian Army Hospital at Southall, England. Promoted to Lance Corporal 21 June 1918. Admitted to 2nd Auxiliary Hospital (ex staff); reason stated as 'Age and Debility'.
