War service: embarked from Australia, 23 November 1915. Admitted to 4th Auxiliary Hospital, Cairo, 2 December 1915 (mumps). Transferred to Zeitoun, 14 March 1916, and taken on strength of the Divisional Artillery Column.

Embarked at Alexandria, 20 March 1916, to join the British Expeditionary Force; disembarked Marseilles, 27 March.

Transferred to 22nd Howitzer Battery, 29 April 1916. Attached to the 104th Battery, 6 May 1916; transferred to 2nd Divisional Artillery Column, 27 May 1916.

Private mustered as Driver, 2 September 1916.

Proceeded on leave, 6 May 1917; rejoined unit, 19 May.

Accidentally injured, 9 June 1917 (injury to left side, fractured pelvis - he was holding a mule for shoeing and the mule kicked him). Admitted to 5th Field Ambulance; transferred to 56th Casualty Clearing Station. Admitted to No. 3 Stationary Hospital, Rouen; transferred to England. Admitted to 1st Southern General Hospital, 14 June 1917. Transferred to 3rd Auxiliary Hospital, 23 July 1917.

Granted furlough, 31 July-14 August 1917. After reporting to Weymouth, he was sent to the Overseas Training Bn, Perham Downs; proceeded overseas to France; 29 November 1917. Taken on strength of the 2nd Divisional Artillery Column, 7 December 1917. On leave to England, 9 November 1918; rejoined unit from leave, 30 November 1918. Embarked for England on 26 February 1919. Left theatre of war for his return to Australia, 27 February 1919; arrived in Australia, 10 June 1919.
