Proceeded from Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 18 March 1916; disembarked Marseilles, 25 March 1916. Reverted to Private at own request, 18 October 1917. Appointed Lance Corporal, 28 November 1917. Wounded in action, 15 April 1918 (gun shot wound, left leg), and admitted to 55th Field Ambulance; transferred to 10th General Hospital, Rouen, 19 April 1918 (left leg amputated); to England, 20 April 1918, and admitted to Reading War Hospital, 21 April 1918 (wound severe); to 2nd Australian Auxiliary Hospital, Southall, 1 August 1918.
