Embarked Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 1 June 1916; disembarked Marseilles, France, 8 June 1916 (day unclear).

Found guilty, 24 June 1916, of being absent without leave from 2100 to 2245, 24 April: awarded 48 hours' Field Punishment No 2, and forfeited 2 days' pay.

Admitted to 13th Field Ambulance, 19 August 1917 (venereal disease: gonorrhoea); transferred to 7th General Hospital, Boulogne, 20 August 1917; to 39th General Hospital, Havre, 23 August 1917.

Tried by Field General Court Martial, 29 September 1917, of when on Active Service disobeying a lawful command given by his superior Officer, in that he at 39th General Hospital Havre on 14/09/17 when ordered by No 54279 Sgt D. Franks RGA to go to the treatment hut and carry on with his fatigue, did not do so: found guilty; awarded 56 days' Field Punishment No 1, and forfeited 70 days' pay.

Discharged from hospital, 22 December 1917; total period of treatment for venereal disease: 126 days.

Admitted to 2nd General Hospital, Havre, 31 December 1917 (piles); discharged to Base Depot, 13 January 1918.

Admitted to 4th Stationary Hospital, Harfleur, 16 January 1918 (piles); discharged, 9 February 1918.
