Taken on strength, 24th Bn, Gallipoli, 29 September 1915. Evacuated on hospital ship, 10 December 1915 (frost bite), and admitted to No. 3 Auxiliary Hospital, Heliopolis, Egypt, 24 December 1915.

Proceeded from Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 20 March 1916; disembarked Marseilles, 26 March 1916.

Wounded in action, 5 August 1916 (gun shot wound, right ankle); admitted to No. 2 Australian General Hospital, Wimereux, 8 August 1916. Transferred to England, 9 August 1916; admitted to Napsbury Hospital, 10 August 1916 (wound severe: lower leg amputated). Transferred to No. 1 Auxiliary Hospital, Harefield, 1 September 1916; to No. 2 Auxiliary Hospital, Southall, 21 December 1916; discharged to Depot, 3 July 1917.

Commenced return to Australia on board 'Karoola', 3 July 1917; disembarked Melbourne, 27 August 1917; discharged, 23 October 1917.
