'For great gallantry and devotion to duty in an attack upon an enemy strong point and trench at GUEUDECOURT on the morning of 21st February 1917. Though wounded in the head with a bayonet in a hand-to-hand encounter he managed to kill his opponent. Subsequently he remained at his post until the objective had been reached and the position in course of consolidation, when he was ordered away by the officer on the spot.'

Wounded in action, 20 February 1917 (gun shot wound, left thigh); admitted to 22nd General Hospital, Camiers, 23 February 1917. Transferred to England, 9 March 1917; admitted to 3rd London General Hospital, Wandsworth, 10 March 1917. Discharged to furlough, 31 March 1917, to report to No. 3 Command Depot, Hurdcott, 16 April 1917. Awarded the Military Medal for bravery in the field, 17 March 1917.

Proceeded overseas to France, 12 September 1917;taken on strength, 45th Bn, 22 September 1917. Appointed Lance Corporal, 4 November 1917; Corporal, 5 May 1918.

Wounded in action, 18 September 1918 (gun shot wound, left heel); rejoined unit, 1 December 1918.

Marched out for return to Australia, 21 April 1919; granted period of non-military employment, 3 June-3 September 1919: mixed farming, Lt Col. Davidson, West Watten, Caithness, Scotland. Commenced return to Australia on board 'Argylshire', 1 August 1919; disembarked Melbourne, 22 September 1919; discharged, 15 November 1919.
