'During the morning of 24th April, 1918, this gunner was out on the telephone lines and assisted in maintaining communications. he showed wonderful pluck, and although he was badly shaken, on more than one occasion, he went on with his work of maintaining the lines and mending breaks as they occurred. He stuck at the work from 4 a.m. until after 9 a.m., and showed great fortitude under most trying conditions.'
