Embarked from Fremantle, 9 November 1916; disembarked Devonport, England, 10 January 1917. Found guilty, Durrington Camp, 31 January 1917, of failing to appear at place of parade appointed by his CO: awarded 28 days' detention. Marched in to 11th training Bn, 22 February 1917. Found guilty, 2 June 1917, of failing to obey Regimental Order 11/8/16, para 5: awarded 7 days' Field Punishment No 2.

Proceeded overseas to France, 14 June 1917; taken on strength, 44th Bn, 6 July 1917. Found guilty, 14 August 1917, of being absent without leave, 9.30 pm, 9 August, to 8.30 pm, 11 August 1917: awarded 14 days' Field Punishment No 2; forfeiture of a total of 16 days' pay. Found guilty, 24 August 1917, of being absent without leave, 9.30 pm, 17 August, to 6.30 am, 20 August 1917: awarded 28 days' Field Punishment No 2 (concurrent with award of 14 August); forfeited 25 days' pay.

Found guilty, Field General Court Martial, 28 November 1917, of 'when on active service absent w.o. leave at or about 2 pm, 11.11.17, until 11 am, 16.11.17 when he reported to his Coy': Awarded 12 months' imprisonment with hard labour; sentence commuted to 90 days' Field Punishment No 2.

Found guilty, 2 May 1918, of while on active service being absent without leave, 6 pm, 26 March, until apprehended by MFP, 5.30 pm, 27 March 1918: awarded 7 days confined to camp; forfeited 2 days' pay. Admitted to 7th Canadian Stationary Hospital, 1 October 1918 (shell wound, left thigh); transferred to 22nd General Hospital, Camiers, 3 October 1918; to England, 5 October 1918, and admitted to Fort Pitt Military Hospital, Chatham; to 3rd Auxiliary Hospital, Dartford, 21 October 1918; discharged to No 2 Command Depot, Weymouth, 23 October 1918. On leave, 14 November 1918. Reported absent without leave, 14 November 1918; apprehended, 27 November 1918; found guilty, 14 December 1918: awarded 15 days' Field Punishment No 2; forfeited 45 days pay. Found guilty, 23 June 1919, of being absent without leave, 9 am, 19 June, to 3 pm, 21 June 1919: awarded 3 days Field Punishment No 2; forfeited total of 6 days' pay. Found guilty, 9 September 1919, of being absent without leave, 13-30 August 1919: awarded 21 days' detention; forfeited total of 39 days' pay.
