'For great coolness and bravery in tending to wounded under very heavy shell fire on 1st October, 1917, near ZONNEBEKE. On the night 1st October, 1917, after the Company had been relieved in the front line he returned with Private CARTER to bring out a wounded man despite a heavy barrage from the enemy artillery.
