Promoted Corporal, 4 November 1916. Proceeded overseas to France, 24 November 1916. Detached to 2nd Army Signal School, 15 January 1917; rejoined 3rd Pioneer Bn, in the field, 27 February 1917. Appointed Lance Sergeant, 16 July 1917; Temporary Sergeant, 10 August 1917; promoted Sergeant, 19 September 1917. On leave to England, 20 December 1917; rejoined Bn from leave, 6 January 1918. Promoted Temporary Company Sergeant Major (Warrant Officer Class II), 22 July 1918. Promoted 2nd Lieutenant, 15 September 1918. Detached to Australian Corps Signal School, 20 September 1918.
