Embarked from Alexandria to join the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force (Gallipoli), 2 March 1915. Appointed Lance Corporal, 7 October 1915; Temporary Corporal, 6 December 1915. Disembarked Alexandria, 29 December 1915 (general Gallipoli evacuation).

Transferred to 50th Bn, Tel-el-Kebir, 26 February 1916.

Proceeded from Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 5 June 1916; disembarked Marseilles, 12 June 1916. Appointed Temporary Sergeant, 14 August 1916.

Wounded in action, 16 August 1916; remained at action. Transferred to 13th Training Bn; reverted to Corporal, 28 October 1916. Marched in to 13th Training Bn, England, 6 November 1916. Found guilty, 3 January 1917, of conduct prejudicial to good order and discipline in that he left rifle and equipment unattended; awarded severe reprimand.

Proceeded overseas to France, 19 April 1917; rejoined 50th Bn, 25 April 1917. Promoted Sergeant, 2 May 1917; Temporary CQMS, 1 September 1917. On leave, 27 January 1918; rejoined Bn, 11 February 1918. Promoted CQMS to complete establishment, 1 March 1918.

Transferred to AIF Headquarters for return to Australia, 27 August 1918. Granted leave, 29 August 1918, to report to No 2 Command Depot, Weymouth, 4 September 1918.

Commenced return to Australia on board 'Arawa', 19 September 1918 (submarine guard duty); disembarked Melbourne, 17 November 1918; discharged, 8 January 1919.
