Military Medal 'For gallantry at MOUQUET FARM on 24th/25th August, 1916, when his patrol-leader Corporal HARRIS was wounded and both buried by a shell close to the German trenches. Having extricated his leader, dressed his wound and placed him in a shell-hole, Private McLACHALn completed the reconnaissance along the enemy front and then secured stretcher bearers to remove the wounded man across 100 yards of open ground, let up by enemy flares. He also distinguished himself the following day by his coolness and courage in command of a covering party to men sapping out.'
