Admitted to hospital, 15 December 1916 (bronchitis); discharged to duty, 18 December 1916. Admitted to hospital, 13 April 1917 (tonsillitis); discharged to Divisional Rest Camp, 25 April 1917. Wounded in action, 8 June 1917 (gassed); admitted to 1st Australian Casualty Clearing Station; transferred to No. 11 Stationary Hospital, Rouen, 9 June 1917; to Convalescent Depot, 26 June 1917. Found guilty of conduct to the prejudice of good order and discipline in that he insisted on smoking on parade while orders were being read after being warned by the CSM not to do so, 3 September 1917: awarded forfeiture of 2 days' pay. Rejoined Bn in the field, 8 September 1917. Awarded the Military Medal in the field, 28 January 1918.
