Joined 12th Bn, Railhead, Egypt, 1 March 1916.

Proceeded from Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 29 March 1916; disembarked Marseilles, 5 April 1916. To 2nd Entrenching Bn, 10 August 1916. Transferred to 3rd Infantry Brigade HQ, 5 November 1916.

Proceeded to England as batman to Staff Captain B.J. Andrews, 14 February 1917; rejoined unit in France, 8 April 1917. Detached for duty at 1st Division HQ as batman to Captain Andrews, 24 April 1917; rejoined unit from detachment, 6 May 1917. Detached for duty at 1st Division HQ, 18 June 1917; rejoined unit, 20 July 1917.

Transferred to 12th Bn, 11 October 1917.

Wounded in action, 17 April 1918 (shell wound, right knee), and admitted to 1st Australian Field Ambulance; embarked for England, 20 April 1918, and admitted to Prince Christian Military Hospital, Englefield, Surrey, 20 April 1918; transferred to 1st Auxiliary Hospital, Harefield, 27 April 1918; discharged to No 3 Command Depot, Hurdcott, 11 May 1918. Admitted to Training Brigade Hospital, Hurdcott, 25 June 1918. Proceeded overseas to France, 6 September 1918; rejoined unit, 19 September 1918.

Marched out for return to Australia, 17 April 1919; commenced return to Australia on board 'Ormonde', 16 June 1919; disembarked Sydney, 4 August 1919; discharged, 26 September 1919.
