War service: Western Front Found guilty, England, 11 November 1916, of being absent without leave from midnight, 3 November, to 7.45 pm, 9 November 1916: awarded 21 days' Field Punishment No 2, and forfeited a total of 27 days' pay. Proceeded overseas to France from England, 25 November 1916. Admitted to hospital, 9 December 1916; rejoined unit, 1 January 1917. Appointed Lance Corporal, 25 July 1917. Wounded in action, 31 July 1917; invalided to England, 5 August 1917, and admitted to 1st Birmingham War Hospital, 6 August 1917 (gun shot wound, back). Proceeded overseas to France, 17 January 1918; rejoined Bn, 24 January 1918. Wounded in action (second occasion), 1 September 1918 (gun shot wound, ear and scalp); invalided to England, 4 September 1918, and admitted to 1st Southern General Hospital, Birmingham, 4 September 1918.
