Originally due to embarked with 11th Light Horse Regiment, C Squadron, June 1915. Taken ill, and reassigned to 9th Light Horse Regiment. War service: Egypt, Palestine Taken on strength, 9th Light Horse Regiment, Heliopolis, 10 February 1916. Rejoined 11th Light Horse Regiment, 22 February 1916. Appointed Lance Sergeant, 19 June 1916; Temporary Sergeant, 10 July 1916; Sergeant, 27 October 1916. Admitted to 1/2 East Riding Field Ambulance, 29 October 1916 (tonsilitis); discharged to duty, 21 November 1916. Wounded in action, Palestine, 13 November 1917 (gun shot wound, neck), and admitted to 4th Light Horse Field Ambulance; transferred to 74th Casualty Clearing Station, 14 November 1917; to 44th Stationary Hospital, Kantara, 15 November 1917; to 14th Australian General Hospital, Abbassia, 16 November 1917. Listed as 'dangerously ill', 18 November 1917. Medical report, 31 December 1917: 'Complete paralysis from waist downwards came on immediately [after wounding].'
