Mention in Despatches 'For exceptionally conscientious work and devotion to duty as Brigade Transport Officer ever since landing in France ... He is absolutely fearless in the execution of his duty and nightly at Pozieres conducted his transport convoy through the enemy's barrage of Shells in Sausage Valley, with coolness combined with pluck and dash.' Awarded, and promulgated, 'London Gazette', second Supplement, No. 29890 (2 January 1917); 'Commonwealth Gazette' No. 103 (29 June 1917). Recommendation date: Military Cross 'For constant devotion to duty as Brigade Transport Officer. He has acted as Transport Officer since the formation of the Brigade. Since coming to France his work has been of a very high standard. He has done excellent work in the forward areas, in all sorts of conditions of weather, both by day and night, and on many occasions under hell fire. Despite this he discharged every duty faithfully and well. Owing to his close personal supervision the animals have been kept in excellent condition, and with two or three exceptions they are same horses as have been on the battalion establishment since 1915.'
