Proceeded to join the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force, 2 March 1915; promoted to acting Sergeant, 20 July 1915; admitted to No 15 General Hospital, 10 August 1915; transferred to Red Cross Hospital, 13 September 1915 (diphtheria); discharged to duty, 3rd Echelon, Mediterranean Expeditionary Force, 29 September 1915; transferred to unit and struck off strength, 24 January 1916; to be Sergeant, 26 February 1916; transferred to 52nd Bn, Railhead, 1 July 1916.

Proceeded to join the British Expeditionary Force, 5 June 1916; disembarked Marseilles, France, 12 June 1916.

Wounded in action, 4 September 1916; admitted to 13th Australian Stationary Hospital, Boulogne, and transferred to England, 8 September 1916 (gun shot wound, back); discharged to Woodside, awaiting discharge from Australian Imperial Force, 18 December 1916; declared 'permanently unfit for war service, home or abroad', 6 January 1917.
