Proceeded overseas to France from 14th Training Bn, 21 December 1916; taken on strength, 54th Bn, in the field, 8 February 1917. Wounded in action, 29 March 1917 (gun shot wound, right thigh and leg, fractured), and admitted to 15th Australian Field Ambulance; transferred to 3rd Australian Casualty Clearing Station, 30 March 1917; to 6th General Hospital, Rouen, 12 April 1917; to England, 2 May 1917, and admitted to Fulham Military Hospital, 3 May 1917 (right leg amputated below knee: condition serious); transferred to 2nd Auxiliary Hospital, Southall, 28 June 1917; granted furlough, 2 October 1917, to report to 2nd Auxiliary Hospital, 16 October 1917. Discharged to Depot, 16 March 1918.
