Military Cross

'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. Under heavy enemy shelling from a 15 cm. battery he went alone into the ammunition pit and extinguished a fire which had been started in the ammunition and camouflage. His courageous action not only saved the guns and a large quantity of ammunition, but also prevented the fire assuming such proportions as would have given the enemy valuable indications of our intentions.'
