'Near CLERY-sur-SOMME on the 31st August, 1918, Private MEHEGAN who was acting as a Battalion runner performed sterling services. On many occasions he carried important despatched over difficult country, and under heavy Artillery and Machine gun fire. On one occasion he was selected as a man of exception pluck and resource to take forward urgent messages to the outpost line. This he did in record time, passing unflinchingly through heavy Artillery and Machine Gun fire, and on his return coolly asked if any further messages were required to be taken out. On another occasion he volunteered and guided an ammunition party forward to an advanced company who were busily engaged in repulsing a counter-attack. Again, he was instructed to guide a party back to Brigade Headquarters through severe artillery fire and across gullies filled with gas. On every occasion he exhibited splendid qualities of resource and endurance. His readiness for any task and his indomitable spirit in the face of most trying conditions was a source of encouragement to all with whom he came in contact.'
