War service: Egypt, Western Front Transferred to 55th Bn from 5th Brigade Details, 3 April 1916; taken on strength of 55th Bn, Ferry Post, 3 April 1916. Embarked Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 19 June 1916; disembarked Marseilles, France, 29 June 1916. Posted missing, 20 July 1916. Court of Enquiry, held in the field, 26 July 1917, pronounced fate as 'Killed in Action, 20 July 1916'. Note, Red Cross File No 1770502: 'No trace Germany. CERT. by Capt. Mills 10.10.19.' Statement, 7901 Driver H.M. McCONNELL, 10th Company, Australian Army Service Corps (patient, No 11 Stationary Hospital, Rouen), 9 January 1917: 'Infrmant says he knew a Charlie Millard in C. or D. Coy. in the 55th Battn. who came from Ashfield N.S.W. This man was reported missing about July 19th at Fleurbaix and Pte. Young of the same Coy. told Informant that Millard had been blown up by a shell in the attack.' Second statement, 3080 Pte J. HARTNEY, 55th Bn, 3 April 1917: 'This man was captured by the enemy, he and others were under the charge of Lieut. Folcard late of Sydney. This happened in an advance made at Fromelles on July 19/16.
