War service: England Commenced return to Australia on board HT 'Plassey', 5 September 1919; discharged (medically unfit), Sydney, 20 May 1920. Medal: British War Medal Mary Proctor, 11 D'Arcy Terrace, Sunderland, England, wrote to the Army, 25 September 1920: 'During the period of service by [MILLEN] he came to Sunderland, and represented to me that he was a single man & made me a promise of marriage. On 17th May last I gave birth to a child of which Millen is the father, & I hold a Telegram & also two letters from him in which he admits the fatherhood. I brought my case before the Record Office of the A.I.F., 54 Victoria St London, & they informed me that he was a married man, & had returned to Australia to be demobilized, & they suggested I should write you ... I shall be much obliged if you can either give me information or advise me as to what steps I can take to make Millen share the responsibility of the child.' Base Records replied, 8 November 1920, that 'as ... [MILLEN] has been discharged from the Australian Imperial Force this branch can do nothing in the matter. It is therefore suggested you consult a solicitor.' |
