Military Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during operations against enemy positions south of the SOMME, east of HAMMEL, on 8th August, 1918. Lance Corporal MILLS was in charge of a Lewis gun section. During the advance when his platoon was being held up by machine gun fire he attacked a covering party to a machine gun and firing from the hip killed two of the enemy and captured four others. He then rushed the machine gun position, capturing four more prisoners and a heavy machine gun. He greatly inspired his comrades by his conspicuous bravery. The platoon was then enabled to advance without further casualties.'
