The Acting Imperial Russian Consul, Adelaide, wrote to the Army on 27 February 1917, stating that BERG's real name was Arne KATTINEN; that he had used the name BERG since December 1910; and that he had arrived in Australia on board the 'Kokohead' only two weeks previously (i.e. early February 1917).

War service: Western Front

Embarked Adelaide, 23 June 1917; disembarked Plymouth, 25 August 1917; marched in to 11th Training Bn, Larkhill, 26 August 1917. Admitted to 1st Australian Dermatological Hospital, Bulford, 27 August 1917; discharged 2 October 1917; total period of treatment for venereal disease: 37 days. Proceeded overseas to France, 17 January 1918; taken on strength, 43rd Bn, 23 January 1918.

Admitted to 5th Australian Field Ambulance, 4 March 1918 (scabies); discharged to duty, 21 March 1918; rejoined unit, 24 March 1918.

Wounded in action, 26 May 1918 (gas), and admitted to 47th Casualty Clearing Station; transferred to Ambulance Train to 2nd Canadian General Hospital, 27 May 1918; to England, 8 June 1918, and admitted to Duchess of Connaught's Red Cross Hospital, Taplow, Buckinghamshire, 9 June 1918; to 1st Auxiliary Hospital, Harefield, 17 June 1918; discharged to No. 3 Command Depot, Hurdcott, 19 June 1918. Married Carrie Ethel ROBINSON, 29 July 1918, at St Paul's Established Church, West Hartlepool, Durham. Marched in to Overseas Training Brigade, Long Deverill, 20 August 1918. Found guilty,14 August 1918, of being absent without leave, midnight, 7 August, to 9 pm, 9 August 1918: forfeited 2 days' pay; total forfeiture: 4 days' pay. Proceeded overseas to France, 13 September 1918; rejoined 43rd Bn, 18 September 1918.

Admitted to 11th Australian Field Ambulance, 28 October 1918 (influenza); transferred to 3rd Australian General Hospital, 29 October 1918; to England, 8 November 1918, and admitted to Exeter War Hospital, 9 November 1918 (pneumonia, severe); discharged, 6 November 1918, and granted furlough to report to No. 1 Command Depot, Sutton Veney.

Commenced return to Australia on board HT 'Marathon', 7 November 1919; disembarked Adelaide, 24 December 1919; discharged, 15 February 1920.
