War service: Egypt, England. Embarked Alexandria, Egypt, 6 June 1916; disembarked Plymouth, England, 16 June 1916. To be Temporary Sergeant on the permanent staff of 8th Training Bn, Tidworth, 1 January 1917. Promoted Corporal, and to retain the rank of Temporary Sergeant, 24 January 1917. Marched out of 8th Training Bn, 5 November 1917, and reverts to the rank of Corporal; marched into 15th Training Bn, Codford, 5 November 1917, and promoted Temporary Sergeant.
