Military Medal

'For gallantry in the field near ROSIERES on 9th August 1918. After this man's No. 1 on the Lewis Gun had been wounded he took charge of the gun and throughout the day handled the gun very skilfully, accounting for a great number of the enemy. On 11th August 1918 when his gun had been badly damaged to the rear and salvaged parts of another disabled gun, in a very short time having his own gun in action again. His devotion to duty and disregard of machine gun fire was a fine example. The fact that this man got his gun into action so promptly was of material assistance in beating off a strong counter-attack.'
