'This N.C.O. during operations north west of POZIERES on night of 8th/9th August, 1916, was in charge of Company Scouts, and he crept close to enemy's position under machine gun and snipers fire and was always cool and courageous. He set a splendid example to the men in his vicinity. He had the respect of his officers for his splendid work so much so that when he was wounded his Company Commander carried him to a place of safety.'
