War service: Western Front Embarked Hobart, 1 July 1916; disembarked Devonport, England, 28 August 1916. Proceeded overseas to France, 23 November 1916. Wounded in action, Armentieres, 25 December 1916 (shell shock: buried three times by shell explosion, rendered unconscious), returned to duty .Admitted to 9th Field Ambulance, 8 January 1917, and transferred same day to 2nd Australian Casualty Clearing Station; transferred to 14th General Hospital, Wimereux, 11 January 1917 (dilated heart: slight); transferred to Ambulance Train, 16 January 1917, and thence to England, 17 January 1917, and admitted to 3rd London General Hospital, Wandsworth, 18 January 1917. Transferred to 6th Auxiliary Hospital, 25 January 1917; discharged to No 4 Command Depot, Perham Downs, 5 March 1917. Admitted to Tidworth Military Hospital, 17 May 1917 (duodenal ulcer); discharged on sick leave, 16 July 1917. Commenced return to Australia on board HT 'Eurpides', 21 July 1917; arrived Melbourne for onward travel to Hobart; discharged (appointment terminated), 19 October 1917.
