Distinguished Conduct Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in endeavouring, under heavy fire, to save the life of a wounded comrade. On 30 October, 1918, near Mortagne, he and a comrade were sent to investigate some buildings recently occuied by the enemy. Whilst returning, his mate was so badly wounded by a bullet that he could not crawl. He succeeded in carrying him back to safety, although being fired at all the time by snipers and machine guns.'
