Military Medal 'On 31st July, 1917, near MESSINES, on the south eastern slope of the Ridge, this N.C.O. was in charge of a squad of twelve men loading cases on the trucks in the open. The whole area was under shell fire continuously and the work was of a most trying nature. The leader of the party showed great determination and stuck to his job and kept his party together in an excellent manner. He was blown over by a shell at 11 a.m. and again two hours later, but continued to carry out his duties until the party was relieved at dusk. He showed throughout personal courage, devotion to duty and a steady determination coupled with capacity for leadership and a cheerful manner which inspired all under him.'
