'This N.C.O. until promoted to Corporal, served as No. 1 Lewis Gunner, and in that capacity was repeatedly conspicuous for his utter fearlessness. In an attack on MORLANCOURT on two occasions he went straight at enemy machine gun positions, firing his Lewis Gun from the hip and so masking the enemy's fire that his comrades outflanked the enemy strong points and displayed the gun crews. Later in a counter attack he jumped out in front of our position and brought his gun into action from a flank completely demoralising the enemy. His courage and devotion to duty had a great effect on his comrades who would follow him anywhere.'
