Military Medal 'On the 24th October, 1916, during operations in the SOMME area, Private BERTIE's platoon was engaged in digging a communication trench just behind the firing line under a steady shell fire. His section leader and three men were killed by shells but the example of cheerfulness and fearlessness displayed by Private BERTIE under these trying conditions was such that he reassured the rest of the men and the work was carried through.'
