'During afternoon of 23rd September 1917, a shell exploded among a squad of bearers, killing one and wounding the other three. Thinking that two were remaining out unattended this man went out to search for them. In doing this he took a great risk as the enemy was heavily shelling the area. After proceeding some hundreds of yards they met other squads bringing these men in. This man's work has been consistently good and conspicuous - since the above event this man has been evacuated wounded.'
