Found guilty, Larkhill, 15 September 1916, of being absent without leave for 3 days: awarded 10 days' Field Punishment No 2, and forfeiture of 13 days' pay. Proceeded overseas to France, 31 November 1916. Admitted to 10th Field Ambulance, 25 February 1917 (accidental injury: twisted right knee, old injury); transferred to 9th Field Ambulance, 25 February 1917; to 11th Field Ambulance, 27 February 1917; to Divisional Rest Station, 1 March 1917; rejoined unit, in the field, 21 March 1917. Appointed Lance Corporal, 10 April 1917. Promoted Corporal, 2 June 1917.
