'During the recent operations to the north of POZIERES he served with great distinction. He was in charge of all stretcher bearers operating between the first aid post and the front line. Time and again in order to render first aid and to remove wounded men to places of comparative safety he has deliberately, and with the utmost coolness and courage, gone into the enemy intense barrage which usually obtained when operations were being carried out in the area referred to. He is strongly recommended for distinction. Period 8th/12th August and 28th/31st August, 1916.'
