'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during a hostile attack. The heavy shell fire directed against his battery cut all the telephone lines. Not withstanding a continuous fire, he repaired all breaks, and restored communication. Later, the telephone pit was destroyed by a direct hit, and he immediately set to work to rescue and remove the wounded, and while so doing was severely wounded. He refused to leave the post to have his wound dressed, and continued to direct the signallers until the battery ceased firing. His sterling courage, work, and determination were an invaluable example to all.'

Military Cross

'Near Premont, on 8th October 1918, he was acting as forward observation officer, and on moving forward in rear of the infantry towards the final objective, he found a detachment had lost all officers, and were temporarily held up by enemy machine gun fire 3000 yards short of the objective. He immediately organized the party, rushed the enemy, and fought right through with the detachment until the objective was ultimately carried. His fine courage and initiative at a critical period were an invaluable example to the tired infantry with whom he fought.'
