War service: Egypt, Gallipoli Wounded in action, Gallipoli, 28 April 1915 (gun shot wound, left arm); admitted to Military Hospital, Valetta, Malta, 4 May 1915; transferred to England, and admitted to Western General Hospital, Manchester, 28 June 1915. Medical report, 16 January 1916: 'Left Gallipoli on the 28th April 1915 with a G.S.W. Left arm which has left no disability. He complains of great depression, sleeplessness, and excitability. On being included in a Draft for return to his unit, he attempted suicide by cutting his throat with a razor. And says that in his present state he cannot face the idea of going back to his unit.' Commenced return to Australia on board HT 'Suevic' from Portland, 11 March 1916; discharged (medically unfit: nervous breakdown), Adelaide, 19 June 1916.
