Military Medal 'At POZIERES, FRANCE, 16/23rd. August 1916, Pte. MURPHY worked indefatigably, collecting wounded under the extremely heavy enemy fire and especially on the night of the 19th. August, Pte MURPHY did conspicuously fine work in the collecting and bringing in of wounded, making repeated journeys under heavy artillery machine gun and rifle fire, carrying wounded men to safety.'

During the operations East of YPRES 4th, October 1917, and the days following this stretcher bearer showed a fine example of bravery and fortitude. Although over 45 years of age he led his squad backwards and forwards through the enemy barrage, and his continual cheerfulness and bravery were a great encouragement to the younger and less experienced bearers.'
