Medals

Military Medal

'For gallantry and devotion to duty from 28th February to 16th September, 1918. On the morning of 29th July, 1918, Corporal MURPHY was in charge of a gun assisting in a machine gun barrage during the attack on METEREN. Whilst firing his gun was blown out and two of the crew wounded. He at once got the gun into action again. On the morning of the 24th August, 1918, Corporal MURPHY was in charge of a working party detailed to dig gun positions for defence of CHUIGNES when the position was shelled heavily, causing the infantry to move. He completed the work with only one casualty. His coolness and determination on this occasion undoubtedly saved many casualties and enabled the work to be completed. Corporal MURPHY has at all times set a fine example of coolness and devotion to duty and has been of the greatest assistance to his section officer.'
