'On 1st September, 1918, during operations North of PERONNE, this man's Platoon suffered very heavy casualties from enemy Machine Gun fire. On his Section Commander becoming a casualty, Private MURRAY assumed command and handled the Section with the utmost intelligence and initiative, displaying great cheerfulness and courage which served in very good stead to his badly knocked about comrades. On reaching the objective, his keen observation and intelligent use of the ground were of invaluable assistance to his Platoon Commander.'
